St. Benilde International School captured the Laguna leg title of the inaugural National Basketball Championship (NBC) Inter-High beating Mapua Malayan Colleges in record-fashioned, 121-66, on Friday at the Cabuyao Stadium.
The fired-up Baby Blazers dominated the Mapuan side which played sloppy and tentative on both ends, racing to a 66-37 halftime lead and never relinquishing the lead en route to the most lopsided leg final results yet so far in this nationwide talent search for young cagers 19-under from private schools.
The victory gave the Baby Blazers the right to represent Laguna in the South Luzon Championship and picked the No.2 seed in the lottery draw for the scheduled win-or-go-home showdown in the tournament presented by Jams Sports under the supervision of Jamsap Entertainment Corporation headed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jojo Flores.
St. Benilde's dominance in the knockout format tournament sponsored by Mommy's Garden Cafe' Restaurant Events, Sipao's Sports Park, Cabbana Packaging, Daddy's Carwash, Miel's Artisan Cafe', Batang Pilipino Basketball League, Provincial Government of Laguna and Denha put the Baby Blazers as the heavy favorite for the 'Holy Grail'.
The Baby Blazers recorded five tournament records for points in a 146-21 annihilation of Maranatha Christian Academy in the first round as they limited their rivals to just four points in the first period and seven in the second period for a total of 13 points at halftime. After three quarters, St. Benilde ballooned its lead at 126-13 to post the largest winning margin of 135 points.
V. Hisarza top-scored for St. Benilde with 22 points, but his teammate Alexis Apay was awarded Player of the Game as he poured in 20 points, 10 rebounds, and five steals.
