PCU Baby Dolphins hoist Cavite grail, claimed No.3 spot in NBC Inter-High South Luzon Championship

The Philippine Christian University-Dasmarinas taught Gateway Integrated School a neat lesson in basketball, scoring mostly on driving lay-ups and fast breaks to eke out a 108-67 blowout win on Saturday to claim the Cavite leg title for the inaugural National Basketball Championship (NBC) Inter-High at the Bacoor Coliseum.

Using their vast experience playing in the NCAA-West tournament, the Baby Dolphins dropped a 7-0 lead inside two minutes of play. They had never been threatened throughout the game leading by as much as 45 points to advance in the eight-team South Luzon championship in the tournament presented by Jamsap Entertainment Corporation headed by Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Jojo Flores.

"We just stick to the game plan. Medyo tentative din sa first period, kaya madalas and plait ng players para makita agad namin yung blended as laro. Malakas yung Gateway, humugot lang kami sa experience ng mga players who used to play in the NCAA-West Conference," said PCU coach Jonald Mabasa.

"Karamihan sa member ng team mga rookies, kaya may konti pang kaba, pero maagang naitaktak at mabilis and pick up ng play as adjustment namin sa opensa," Mabasa added.

Lauro Fronda, Jr., top-scored for PCU with 20 points, three rebounds, nine steals and four assists.

"Masayang-masaya po kami. For three-month namin sa training, talagang focus ako na magchanmpion kami sa mga ligang sasalihan namin," said Fronda, a PRISSA campaigner from Talisay, Negros Occidental.

Fronda was named Player of the Game in this knockout-format tournament for boys 19-under from private schools nationwide.

Jay Clyde Divinagracia added 19 points for PCU, while Bryan Jayson Padilla had 19 points. Alvhrxys Nicor and Joseph Del Valle poured in 16 and 10 points, respectively for PCU.

Representing Cavite for the coming South Luzon Championship, PCU pick-up No.3 slot in the eight-team knockout meet. Action resumes with the Laguna leg stop starting Nov. 7 at the Cabuyao stadium.

The North Luzon qualifying is slated to resume this month with the Nueva Ecija leg. Currently, the Pampanga Colleges, La Consolacion University, and Far Eastern University already secured their place in the eight-team showdown.
