Top favorite Guagua National Colleges lived up to its lofty billing by beating St. Augustine, 92-85, in a thrilling match on Saturday night at the Gov. Bren Z. Guiao Sports Center in San Fernando.
The Guagua cagers, known for their vast experience in regional participation, will now face Pampanga Colleges in a win-or-go-home championship presented by Jamsap Entertainment Corporation, headed by Chief Executive Officer Jojo Florez through Jams Sports, on Monday (Oct. 16) at the same venue.
CJay Morales was the top scorer with 22 points, while M. Maninang poured in 16 points for the Guagua squad. The game was not without drama as Guagua suffered a third-period meltdown but managed to pull their acts together in the final period to clinch the win to the delight of their supporters. The victory earned them a chance to battle it out with Pampanga Colleges for the coveted Pampanga leg title.
In the match, the Guagua team displayed impressive teamwork and determination, with Tantamco scoring 11 points, Mañalac adding 9 points, J. Mallari scoring 7 points, Marucut and Rivera each contributing 6 points, and Visda and N. Mallari scoring 5 and 4 points, respectively. Macaling and Dimarucut also chipped in with 4 and 2 points, respectively.
On the other hand, St. Augustine put up a good fight, with Dalusong scoring a game-high 26 points, and Moral adding 21 points. Mercado scored 8 points, while Baluyot, Lapuz, David, and Danan contributed 7, 5, 5, and 5 points, respectively. Ignacio and Guevarra scored 4 and 2 points, respectively, while Vergara and Ocampo contributed 1 point each.
